Thanks, Patrick. So is it fair to say policies for the airport are still being worked out, and none of the strategies we’ve seen other cities take (for instance, no marijuana at the airport, or permitting it as long as travelers are in compliance with state quantity limits) are off the table?

Patrick’s statement is fine, I think if we want to be more specific, there’s two things we can say that are relatively uncontroversial…

 

1. We recommend that no one attempt to bring marijuana through a TSA checkpoint as they will not be permitted to board a flight with it per federal regulations.
2. If TSA discovers someone who has legal amounts of marijuana, local law enforcement wouldn’t charge them with anything because no crime has been committed.

I’m a reporter with the Chicago Tribune working on a story about marijuana legalization and what it will mean for travelers in the city. In states that have already legalized recreational marijuana, there’s a lot of variation in how they handle rules about whether you can have it at the airport or not (since it’s still illegal under federal law, which the TSA follows). I spoke with the CDA, which said they’re working with the TSA and the city to follow local and federal guidelines, so I wanted to check with to you see whether the city has established any policies around whether legally purchased marijuana will be permitted at the airport and how local law enforcement will respond if TSA calls them in after discovering legal marijuana at a checkpoint.

Zumbach's looking for a statement from the Mayor's Office on this as well. How about this? 

 

Statement:

“The City is working with our state and local partners to develop comprehensive rules and regulations that will guide a safe and equitable implementation of legalized cannabis in Chicago next year. As the City continues to craft local guidelines for use and possession in accordance with the state bill, part of this effort will include working with TSA and Chicago Department of Aviation to guide how airport visitors and employees may transport and possess cannabis on airport grounds."

 

Background:

• With the state now offering businesses an opportunity to apply for dispensary licensing, the City is currently working to develop zoning regulations for recreational cannabis sales and use. We intend to introduce these regulations by ordinance at City Council this fall. 
• This will be the first step in a series to ensure the City is prepared for a safe and equitable rollout of this new industry ahead of January 2020.
